My feet hinge at the bottom (ankle) so therefore the thing I press with my feet should hinge at the bottom.

If I had to choose between those 2, floor hinged all the way. But top can be done right...

I care less about how they are hinged than I care about where they are and how they are shaped.
The Challenger manual I rented had big pedals spaced far apart. Hated it.

Both are wrong. Ze Germans have it right - floor hinged for the gas, top hinged for the other two.

Contrariwise, with a top-hinge, the hinge and the hinge of your ankle between them form a sort of primitive Watt’s link, so rather than all action rotating around your ankle, the contact point between the ball of your foot and the pedal travels in a more or less straight line.
The total force and action, then, remain more or less steady and in line with your leg.

Floor hinged or die

top every time, cant stand floor mount.

Top mount is easier to get the geometry right. Of course, some cars mix and match. One trouble with bottom hinge hydraulics is that they often mean master cylinders under the floor.

I have a
conjecture
as to why. It’s in keeping with standing on the balls of your feet in terms of how you push, and also allows you to push with your leg better.

BMW has a floor mounted gas and the other two are top mounted. It works pretty well for me and apparently is easier to heel toe since the gas pedal is so large. Easy to find with your heel.

Mazda does it this way as well. Truly the best of both worlds.

Floor in super low track cars. Top mount on road cars.

Yep. My Skoda is the same. Hinged from the top for brake and clutch, from the bottom for the accelerator.

Top, I feel like I have more control or can push better with a top mount. Hard to put into words, but it feels better.

I agree completely, whenever I drive a BMW I always love the floor mounted accelerator pedal, it just feels so right being able to have all if my foot on the pedal and I find make small smooth inputs on the pedal so easy.

Floor because race car.

The reason this is better than the reverse is that the pedal requiring almost no pressure can be tweaked with light ankle motion, while the two requiring more force can be pushed in more or less a straight line. Of course, the earliest Jeeps *and* Land Rovers did that backwards.

Floor mounted throttle. Hinged brake and clutch.

Top hinged for brake, bottom hinged for gas. I love the pedals in my BMW and every time I drive my mom’s Fusion the gas pedal drives me nuts. Even my mom who doesn’t notice shit like that commented on how much she liked the gas pedal in my car.
Alternatively, top hinged pedals that are long enough that the bottom hits the floor and it has a two-stage swing to it, a la GMT800 trucks and SUVs.

I’m a big fan of the floor hinged gas, and top hinged brake and clutch in my e36. I could see how a bottom hinged clutch would be nice though.

but why make one different than the others? I always found it awkward because your always dancing between two pedals and they have different movements its tough to be smooth

Ze Germans know best.

Top for me. I have those same pedals on one of my cars. Love em.
The clutch action feels strange on the floor mounts. Im sure I would get used to it though. Older 911s have that and it felt strange to me.

I don’t know why it works so well, but it just does. I’ve never had issues smoothly applying the gas and brake. I actually struggle more smoothly applying a top-hinged gas pedal because a lot of newer ones aren’t long enough for how I place my foot so only the very tippy top of my foot actually catches the pedal.

Gas pedal bottom mounted, clutch and brake top.

Bottom for throttle and top for brakes. I’ve gotten so comfortable with the setup in my S-Class and most other Germans that I can’t go away from the setup comfortably.

I can attest that the BMW pedals are good.

I argue that because my foot is hinged from the heel the car should do the opposite. Yin, meet Yang.
